If you’re shopping in Livingston (the reason most people visit Livingston), the tendency is to stay at The Centre for lunch or dinner where there’s a range of familiar chain restaurants like Nando’s, Chiquito and Pizza Express. However, just a short drive away is a restaurant away from the hustle and bustle that’s worth a try.
Oscar’s Bar and Grill is an independent, family run business. They offer everything you would expect from a classic Scottish Bar and Grill. They use all local suppliers and aim to offer friendly service and value for money.
We joined them for a midweek lunch, this is the menu.
To start I had the Garlic Mushrooms. A huge portion of button mushrooms arrived in a well cooked sauce served with two doorstops of garlic bread. Nobody goes home hungry from Oscar’s it would seem!
My friend was also well fed after her Homemade Chicken Liver Parfait. The food at Oscar’s is unfussy. The menu reads very easily and you get exactly what’s described. Those who like straightforward honest food in plentiful portions will be very happy here.
The menu has a strong leaning towards Italian cuisine and both of us ended up with pasta dishes. I’d like to say we were carb loading before a gym session, in reality we were just starving and ended up skiving much of the gym session which followed.
I ordered the Oscar’s Milanese, one of my favourite Italian dishes. A breaded chicken escalope is served with classic spaghetti arrabiata. It’s messy to eat but worth it.
My friend had the Spaghetti Carbonara. Despite being a midweek lunch time, everything tasted really fresh. The service was also friendly as per their promise.
I couldn’t really find much to complain about at Oscar’s. It’s a good local independent restaurant that I know a lot of my own family would enjoy. The large portions meant unfortunately we couldn’t manage a dessert, you’ll just need to go along and try one for yourself!
I’d definitely recommend Oscar’s Bar and Grill if you’re in Livingston. While I’m not against chain restaurants at all, they have their place, and I certainly have my favourites, if we want independent restaurants to survive we need to support them.
