Tinto Hotel
January 7, 2018

It was dark and quite snowy as we arrived at the Tinto Hotel which is located just outside Biggar. It’s not that we didn’t arrive in good time, darkness is just a feature of Scottish winters.

Despite the darkness we could both appreciate how pretty Tinto was. The hotel is set in five stunning gardens and with beautiful countryside beyond. If it’s escape you’re looking for, Tinto certainly delivers.

The Hotel

Tinto Hotel Biggar

Tinto is a traditional country house hotel, perfect setting for a short break. Built in 1914, it has retained that old world charm you look for in a country hotel.

Despite being very well kept I was surprised to discover the hotel was very quiet, we were the only ones staying that night, and I couldn’t find any good reason why. Tinto deserves to be used and enjoyed.

Beyond the reception is a grand staircase with stained-glass windows, this is overlooked by a lounge area where you can enjoy a drink from the small bar.

Behind that is the conservatory where breakfast and dinner is served. Read more about our dinner here.

The Room

Biggar Hotel

The room was really spacious with stunning views across the gardens from both windows.

One of the things we both noticed was the good condition of the furniture and soft furnishings. Often country hotels like Tinto can be a little tired, but that wasn’t the case here. The decor managed to strike the right balance between modern and traditional.

The quality finish carried through to the bathroom which was either very new, or very well kept. There was some complimentary toiletries should you make an unplanned stop.

The Breakfast

The breakfast was served in the conservatory. There was a choice of tea, coffee, juices etc Plus a cooked breakfast menu, of course we went for the full cooked breakfast. Everything was good quality and we really enjoyed it. And this all leads me back around to my original thought, why is Tinto not much busier? To be fair we did visit at a quieter time of year, but still.

If I was you I’d book a getaway and take advantage of the great deals!
