A few weeks back my sister in law and I went to the Radisson Collection Edinburgh (formerly the G&V Hotel, formerly Missoni). It was a final pre-natal treat before giving birth – I’m delighted to announce that a couple of weeks on and I am the proud aunt to my first nephew, Hamish.
Despite being offered a lovely glass of fizz, I decided to abstain in support and so we both enjoyed a delicious non alcoholic cocktail with our afternoon tea. It was a twist on a mojito with the flavour of elderflower. If you’re not drinking alcohol for whatever reason, Epicurean do some of the best non alcoholic cocktails I’ve had.
Here are the three menus: Cocktails, Tea, and Afternoon Tea
I chose the Rooibos Cederberg tea and was pleased when a huge pot arrived. Good news for us, at previous afternoon teas we have found ourselves going through several pots – this meant we didn’t have to hassle the staff for refills. My sister in law had the Passion De Fleurs – a fruity apricot and peach tea with the scent of rose.
The Afternoon Tea was served on a book shelf style stand, it was quite nice as we were able to pop it to the side and still have a conversation with eye contact without peering through the holes.
Th savoury elements were; Ham Hock Croquette, Smoked Salmon & Cucumber Sandwich, Beetroot & Feta Salad, Cheddar Chutney & Tomato Wrap. We switched the smoked salmon element out for another ham croquette which was our highlight. I enjoyed all the savoury bits but I think a second sandwich or a pastry would give the savoury section a bit more substance.
The scones (plain and fruit) were freshly baked, warm, and served with properly thick clotted cream and raspberry and strawberry jam.
My favourite sweet element was the Chocolate Cup with Chocolate Mousse, an unusual afternoon tea component but delicious after the palate cleansing Exotic Fruit Salad. The Macaron and Lemon Meringue Tart were also tasty, I could have passed on the Carrot Cake but that’s probably personal taste.
We had a lovely time, and at £22.50 it’s not the most expensive of the afternoon teas in central Edinburgh.
