I love a good quiz, however I tend to struggle a bit. My areas of knowledge do not cover most of the popular categories of TV, music, film and popular culture. My ideal quiz would predominantly include questions on blogging and social media, business, marketing, poker and, you’ve guessed it, food and drink. Not your usual topics. I was therefore quite excited to be invited to The Apartment’s monthly Food & Drink Quiz as part of a team with Charlotte & Joseph PR.
For £25 you get a three course meal, two glasses of wine, and entry to the quiz. In reality it was so much more.
I arrived just prior to the start of the quiz and joined my team mates, we were a small team of three and against some much larger teams. Excitement quickly turned to trepidation as I started panicking that my food knowledge wouldn’t hold up.
The first round was dedicated to wine and fizz, not my specialist area – I’m more of a cocktail girl! The round was accompanied by a glass of Italian Spumante, and was the beginning of a procession of alcohol that far exceeded the two glasses we had been promised ( a positive selling point for most of us I think).
I tucked into the bread and dip and shortly after our first course arrived. Mushroom Pate with Whipped Goats Cheese and Crostini – this was a great starter for me, I love all the ingredients.
Between courses, different rounds were handed out on sheets for us to complete. Not all the rounds were related to food and drink directly, but the arts and film where food featured – this makes the quiz suitable for the non foodie too.
A round related to allergies was particularly challenging.
An additional course of Tomato & Chilli Soup was a nice surprise, adding extra value to the evening.
The main event was a delicate dish of Hake with Saffron Mash, Apples, and Black Pudding. It was a tasty dish but one that would have benefited from a proper sauce to bring the whole thing together. That said, each element was well cooked and I certainly wasn’t complaining about having to wash it down with one of my many glasses of wine.
A fun blind taste test followed, participants had to decipher the red wine from the white. The curveball was all in the temperature at which they were served, that didn’t throw our team captain off the scent though!
Our finale was a final round of general knowledge where finally I felt in my comfort zone, this was accompanied by a dessert of Lemon Tart.
If you like some light entertainment with your food, and love a quiz, this is a great monthly night out.
Unfortunately we didn’t win but I don’t think we embarrassed ourselves. I need to brush up on my allergy knowledge before next time! Thanks Rory and Simon for a great night.
