I’ve been to Greece a few times; Santorini back in 2005 when I was six months pregnant, Crete a few years back on a cruise to see Bethlehem and Jerusalem (I’m not particularly religious, it was an assignment for Cruise International Magazine!), and Vouliagmeni on the ‘Greek Riviera’. This year I’m revisiting Vouliagmeni and will finally visit the Acropolis in Athens.
In short, I love Greece AND the food. With Mr Nick’s already being a firm favourite, I had often driven past My Big Fat Greek Kitchen and was keen to try it, so I was delighted when Kostas emailed asking us to try out their Aegina Mezze For Two. This is a set meal of eight dishes, however for each dish you are invited to choose between two options. As Kostas explained, in broken English (which is a very good thing when dining in an authentic Greek restaurant) this makes up a balanced mezze.
We had no difficulty in choosing our dishes, there was only one where we didn’t like either option and Kostas was happy to exchange this for something else.
We chose: Tzatziki, Meatballs, Courgette Rissoles, Calamari, Spicy Sausage, Lemon Chicken, Chips and Pitta Bread
Lots of ‘safe’ options as we were dining with our ten year old – My Big Fat Greek Kitchen is really family friendly and this set meal really lent itself to dining with children.
The portions were much larger than I had expected and experienced at other mezze/tapas restaurants around the city. The eight dishes fed three of us comfortably, with leftovers!
The Calamari and Spicy Sausage were the highlights for me, but everything was freshly cooked and tasty. The Tzatziki took me straight back to my trips to Greece and tasted exactly the same.
We weren’t going to bother with dessert as we hadn’t managed to finish the mezze, but Kostas delivered some traditional Baklava and an Orange Pie that reminded me a bit of our own bread and butter pudding. Both were delicious and completely finished us off, we were headed straight home for a lie down.
At just £26 for the Aegina Set Meal, it’s great value and well worth a visit.
