You can be in Glasgow in under an hour from Edinburgh. It’s fantastic having two big cities in such close proximity, and if you’re a tourist to Scotland then something you should take advantage of. If you live in Edinburgh then it’s the perfect romantic or girls weekend away!
I was invited for a luxury overnight stay at Blythswood Square Hotel, so jumped on the train with a friend to see what Blythswood had to offer.
After a short journey (complete with train picnic), we arrived at Blythswood Square Hotel which overlooks peaceful gardens but is still within walking distance of Glasgow’s cultural centre.
Boasting a variety of suites, a salon bar, a restaurant, and a fully equipped spa with thermal experience – it’s everything you need for a luxury break, and more. The building is gorgeous and they’ve really made the most of the staircase with a stunning drop chandelier.
We started our luxury night away with a drink in the bar while we waited for our room to be ready. You can also enjoy afternoon tea here.
When we checked into our room we were pleased to discover we had a beautiful view over the aforementioned gardens – you certainly feel as though you’re in the ‘posh’ bit of Glasgow – the benefits of which were felt at bedtime when we were able to keep the windows open and experience minimal noise. In fact, our giggling was the only noise!
The room was very comfortable, decorated with over sized lamps (a feature I noticed thoughout Blythswood) and modern furnishings.
The bathroom was the real surprise – fitted with top to toe marble, it certainly had the wow factor. Our room had a bath and separate shower room and was complete with Elemis products for us to use.
After settling in we took a wander into Glasgow for some tapas and a relaxed afternoon of drinks (the shopping plan was abandoned fairly early on!) before enjoying dinner at The Restaurant.
Beneath the hotel is a Thermal Spa Experience that far exceeded any expectations we had. As well as nine luxury treatment rooms, there’s a thermal suite, two relaxation pools, a lounge and café area, plus several additional relaxing guest areas.
For guests really wishing to treat themselves, they also offer a range of treatments some of which use the ishga product range made here in Scotland from Hebridean seaweed. It’s a favourite brand of mine, so when we were offered a Rhassoul Experience For Two (£75) I was keen to extend our stay a few hours to take advantage. I have been fortunate to try many treatments but this was my first time having a joint treatment, and also my first Rhassoul treatment. It began with an ishga salt scrub to exfoliate the skin which you applied to yourself (or each other if you prefer). This was rinsed off and then followed by mud. It was great fun and it did descend into quite a bit of laughter and silliness.
We spent the following couple of hours going from room to room enjoying the variety of hot, cold, and steam features of the experience. I’ve been to the Gleneagles Spa, and for me the experience and service was on a par with that.
As well as the spa facilities, there is also a small gym for those guests wishing to maintain their fitness during their stay (unfortunately, we cannot count ourselves among them!)
The breakfast looked very inviting when we arrived, all laid out on a gingham table cloth. The buffet included fresh juices, fruit, muesli, yoghurt and continental meats.
There were some lovely five star touches in the presentation, and local produce, which added to the luxury feel.
As well as the buffet selection there’s also menu from which you can order hot dishes. I had the Eggs Benedict – there was the same minor issue with the hollandaise as I had with my turbot dish in the restaurant, it lacked substance and flavour. The rest of the dish was nicely cooked though.
My friend had the Full Scottish Breakfast which looked lovely – nice and fresh and not at all greasy.
Blythswood Square Hotel is a great place to stay if you’re visiting Glasgow. The rooms feel very five star and the thermal spa experience is worth visiting on its own. We had a great time and wouldn’t hesitate to return and recommend.
