I’m always on the look out for new cafes. My niece was born at the end of last year and my sister in law and I have made it our mission to get around as many cafes as possible during her maternity leave – I know, a tough challenge, but I feel we’re up to it.
Bon Tea Room is located in Corstorphine, an area which deserves more independent cafes and shops. Since the recession and Woolworths closing it has seen lots of shops come and go but it finally seems to be on the up with the arrival of Redwood (a Californian style bistro), and more recently Mimi’s (part of an independent cafe and bakery chain in Edinburgh). Back to Bon though which is ranked an impressive 9th on Trip Advisor in the coffee & tea category in Edinburgh
It’s quite small inside, but to our relief large enough for us and the buggy. The menu is simple with a range of toasties and sandwiches, scones and home baking. The service was friendly and nobody seemed to mind too much when our younger guest had a brief ‘moment’ before her lunch. The clientele were loyal and local, out in force to show support with Mimi’s opening just a few doors down – not that I think they have anything to worry about, there’s plenty of business for several cafes/tea rooms in Corstorphine.
We both ordered toasties, there’s something comforting about a cheese and onion toastie and I was relieved to find that it hadn’t been mucked about with. It was what it said it was, and that will do me just fine when it comes to a toastie. The toastie was washed down with my new favourite soft drink, Fentimans Rose Lemonade. I’m into anything flavoured with rose at the moment (if you’re the same go and try the rose ice cream at Hannam’s, one of the nicest ice creams I’ve had).
Having only had the toasties there was plenty of space for cake. We chose the scone and the Victoria sponge. I liked the fact that the Victoria sponge didn’t look too perfect on the stand, it looked like someone had baked it that day and it was going to have that fresh taste to it. It did indeed have the homemade fresh taste and it was packed full of strawberries too which was a nice bonus.
We were free to stay as long as we wanted, but I heard recently they were limiting time on tables to one hour – not sure if that was just a one off or a new policy.
