American food in Edinburgh. That’s what you get when you visit Bubba Q. Not the fake, kind of tastes like a rip off of American food, but the real deal. Having visited a good bit of the Deep South and the East Coast, I’ve had my fill of American food, including slow roasted barbecue meats in Boston (researched before we even left Scotland) and ribs at the famous Rendezvous in Memphis (frequented by the younger members of the Royal Family).
Bubba Q’s is located on the Royal Mile, you descend steps to the small basement restaurant. It has an American feel, but I was pleased to discover that it wasn’t overly themed.
If you follow foodies Instagrammers of Edinburgh (heres ours by the way), there’s a high chance you’ve seen one of the Bubba Q meat platters. They are the highlight, and you should absolutely order one.
We went for the the Pitmaster Tray – it’s £29 and enough for 2-3 people. What’s on it?
Pulled Pork – it’s good pulled pork, not the best I’ve had, but perfectly adequate
Smoked Chicken Legs – these were succulent with a gently smoky flavour – very good
Hot Links – these little jalapeño and cheese sausages are delicious, don’t save them for last, make sure you get your share!
Chicken Wings – two unjointed chicken wings, so that’s the equivalent of four wings (based on how they are usually served)
Ribs – good ribs with the meat falling away from the bone, just as you want it
Beef Brisket – while all the meat on the platter was good, and in some cases very good, the beef brisket was the best. Full of flavour and very tender, you won’t be disappointed.
The platter includes two sides and you can choose from the selection available. We chose the Smothered Fries and the BBQ Pit Beans – I highly recommend both.
The fries are smothered in a cheese sauce, bacon bits and spring onions – moreish is an understatement. The beans are a mix of kidney and haricot beans (the ones used in your canned baked beans), the beans are in a deeply flavoured sauce with meaty bits from the pit.
Don’t be shy about using the range of sauces available. Here’s how we’d rank them (they are all worth trying though).
Badass BBQ Sauce – our favourite
South Carolina Sauce – perfect with the beef brisket
Voodoo BBQ Sauce – spicy, but not as hot as the name suggests
Bubba’s Sweet BBQ – a sweeter version of our favourite, the Badass
The whole tray was so satisfying we couldn’t even consider a dessert!
We highly recommend Bubba Q’s to satisfy your authentic American food cravings.
