With Edinburgh being such a cosmopolitan city to live in, you’re never short of a good place to eat a European style breakfast, or any kind of breakfast really. On Frederick Street, not far from the main hub of Princes Street there is Cafe Rouge. This looked like the ideal place to grab a good coffee, good quality food in a chilled out, Parisian style atmosphere. We ordered A decaf Americano, a Latte and two rounds of Eggs Florentine. It was exactly what we were looking for!
After taking a trip into the centre of Edinburgh to do some shopping, and dealing with the horrendous Edinburgh traffic, we decided to make the most of the recent glorious weather to grab a spot of lunch al fresco. Rather than walking forever to find somewhere, we spotted Cafe Rouge not far from where we parked. It has a nice spot to eat outside and was fairly busy (always a good sign). Having been here before, we knew we would not be disappointed.
The friendly waitress took our drinks order. Beer was very tempting on such a nice day but, being the designated driver, I went the soft drink option, so we ordered a Diet Coke and a very refreshing Bottle Green Elderflower drink.
For lunch, we went for the Croque Monsieur, packed full of melting Gruyère cheese and very good quality ham, topped off with a creamy bechamel sauce. It came with a side order of really excellent, well cooked and not at all greasy French fries.
We also ordered Poulet Escalope, which came with a really crisp, crunchy coating containing moist, well cooked chicken. This also came with the aforementioned exceptionally good fries and some mayonnaise.
All the food was really well cooked and fresh and the atmosphere amongst the diners was boosted by the sunshine. Given the weather, this could have very well been Paris for a day!
