Having been to the other China Red buffet restaurant at the Corn Exchange in Edinburgh where the food is brought to you by means of a conveyor belt, we know that the food easily matches the good fun that’s had by the delivery method. So when we heard that there was a second China Red restaurant opening that wasn’t going to have the novelty factor of the conveyor belt, we weren’t worried and headed there for some lunch.
The format was very similar to other Chinese buffets we had been to, with starters, main courses and puddings all in separate sections. There was an excellent selection of dishes and everything was fresh and piping hot. The Peking shredded duck with pancakes was a particular favourite.
We also had some delicious, tender barbecue spare ribs and some crispy salt and chilli chicken wings which were succulent, salty and spicy with a nice hint of garlic.
There were all the usual favourites on offer for main course with stand outs including Kung Po chicken, salt and pepper chicken and chicken satay.
The dessert section was also well stocked with fresh fruit, individual cheesecakes, full size gateaux and ice cream.
All in all, China Red is really good value for money and really high quality of food. It’s also a great place to take kids as they get to try an awful lot of food and be a bit more adventurous. And if all else fails, they have chicken nuggets!
