The Dome has been an Edinburgh institution since it opened in 1996, and is most popular at Christmas due to its spectacular decorations.
The Dome is located on George Street – you can’t miss it with its Graeco-Roman façade and Corinthian columns!
I have dined at The Dome before, but this time I was invited to experience their newly launched club room.
The Club Room is a simple concept inspired by the L’Entrecote restaurants which began in Paris and have now found popularity in London.
The menu is short – a choice of three starters, one main which is basically steak frites (with unlimited fries!), and three desserts. At £4.90 for starters and desserts, and £18.90 for the steak main course, it’s actually quite a bit cheaper than some of the other offerings in the area and on first glance, looks like great value.
The Club Room itself is opulent but comfortable with chandeliers and leather banquettes and armchairs. I felt it had a similar vibe to The Ivy, albeit without the celeb spotting (although the Scottish rugby boys were out in force when we were there!).
To start we both had the Haggis Rolled in Oatmeal with a Whisky and Mustard Sauce. I have a new found appreciation for haggis and am finding myself ordering it more and more. This version was really tasty with the oatmeal, but the star of the show was the excellent whisky and mustard sauce which was very moreish.
The steak was served on a sharing platter and kept on a hot plate at your table. I really enjoy this style of dining, returning for more, rather than having a heaped plate. The little side salad was a nod to the salad served as a starter at L’Entrecote. The waiters come around and keep you topped up with the unlimited fries. It’s a basic dish, but done well, the simple things will always stand up to any fine dining offering. I like the concept, and have already recommended it.
The dessert was a basic Crepes with Lemon Mascarpone and Honey – again, there was no trickery, it was what it said it was. It was executed well and tasted nice, and at £4.90 is cheaper than many a dessert around the city.
The Club Room is ideal if you have visiting guests, business dinners, and for those who like simpler food but still want to enjoy smart surroundings.
