‘The Elph’, as it’s fondly referred to, is a traditional coaching inn (with a history dating back over 400 years) situated in the centre of Biggar.
We took a drive down earlier in the month. We’ve both been busy with work so it was nice to escape for a while. As we drove through the countryside, we chatted about the merits of taking short breaks away. We arrived late afternoon and took ourselves straight to the lounge for a couple of drinks and games of pool. The pub seemed friendly and even though we weren’t locals, nobody stopped and stared as we walked in. It was nice just to be together in a relaxed setting.
The Elph as previously stated is a coaching inn and our expectations adjusted accordingly. A coaching inn is traditionally a pub/restaurant with rooms – a place for one to rest one’s head after long journeys. In that regard The Elph fulfils its remit. There’s a bar/lounge area, a restaurant, and rooms with wifi and en suite facilities.
The room was quite basic but featured a double bed and bunk beds, so suitable for a family. There was a small tv and good wifi to keep you entertained. The all important tea and coffee making facilities were also in good working order. The bathroom was clean with some basic toiletries, which are handy if you’ve made an unexpected stop. Our only gripe was that we only had one large towel, so we ended up sharing. We were on good terms, so this wasn’t an issue for us, but a towel each should surely come as standard.
Food is available in the on site restaurant, read more about our meal here.
Breakfast was typically Scottish, pick what you like from a list of cooked breakfast items. Everything was good quality and well cooked, eggs can be poached, fried, or scrambled to your liking. Juices and cereal are serve yourself, while tea, coffee and toast are all served to your table.
The Elph isn’t somewhere I’d go for a special overnight break, but it’s somewhere I’d stop off on my journey to get some rest, some good food, and a friendly welcome – which is just what it’s designed for.
