A couple of weeks ago we stayed at a fantastic serviced apartment at The Rutland Hotel, during the evening we had a family meal arranged at Hard Rock Cafe – it felt strange as I imagined this being exactly the sort of place a family on holiday in Edinburgh would dine. While I’m a champion of independent restaurants, I also recognise that there is a time and place for the larger chains. If you’re visiting a new country with your family and you want something familiar, Hard Rock Cafe fits the bill.
Located centrally on George Street, it was a pleasant ten minute walk from where we were staying. We arrived to a bustling Friday night atmosphere but were quickly seated in one of the booths. If you know you want to visit Hard Rock, I’d recommend booking a booth as it’s much comfier than sitting at one the tables in the centre.
We were pretty hungry after a day’s shopping and had saved an appetite for the portions, which I knew were American style. We began with the Potato Skins and Buffalo Chicken Wings, both were excellent, and as expected, more than enough for the three of us (beware of the Nachos, they’re huge – enough to share between a family of four!).
I ordered the New York Striploin with shrimps as an optional extra. It’s my favourite cut and I always get it when I’m in America, so it was a bit of a treat to have it here.
Alex had the Hickory Smoked Ribs which came slathered in barbecue sauce and served with coleslaw and fries. It’s all American food here! The prices can seem a little steep until you see the portion sizes – many of the dishes could be shared.
The kids menu has the usual favourites and are served on fun guitar plates with dips.
We were all pretty stuffed by dessert, but Erin has a sweet tooth so we ordered a Sundae (pictured at the top) to share, again, no need to have a dessert each unless you’re big eaters – one was enough for us!
The food is really tasty at Hard Rock Cafe, if you want somewhere familiar and reliable, or you’re ‘collecting’ Hard Rocks, definitely pay them a visit.
