It had been several (ok, probably over 20!) years since I visited Stirling. If you live in Edinburgh the temptation is to go to Glasgow for an overnight break, but Stirling is beautiful, the castle in my opinion is every bit as impressive as Edinburgh’s, and a great place to escape for the night. I took a friend along to try out Hotel Colessio.
Hotel Colessio is a stunning hotel housed in a Victorian building in the centre of Stirling. Just a short walk from Stirling Castle, shops, cafes, and bars, the hotel is ideal for weekend breaks.
Featuring 40 bedrooms and suites, The Grill Room restaurant & bar and a stunning ballroom with outside terrace, it has everything you want. The exterior has been restored to its former glory and it comes highly recommended by none other than Kylie Minogue who stayed at Colessio in 2014!
After settling into our room we took a walk into Stirling and enjoyed some cake and coffee before heading back to the hotel for a drink in the bar. The location was perfect for a quick break where you don’t want to have to faff around with public transport or taxis.
The bar at the hotel was really comfortable with a good menu which included a nice range of gins, beers and cocktails.
We enjoyed dinner at the hotel’s restaurant, The Grill Room. You can read more about it here, but let’s just say I’ve already recommended it to a friend who is visiting Stirling – it’s not often you find yourself recommending a hotel restaurant! They also have load of offers through the week you can read about them all here – Hotel Colessio Dining Offers.
We were so close to the bars that it seemed silly not to head back out for a couple, once again it was great to feel it wasn’t a huge expedition to have a little nightcap.
The room was comfortable and seemed well kept, no scuffs or stains here. We had a great view over Stirling and plenty of space to spread our stuff out (read: make a mess). After inspecting my clothes for the evening, my friend was unimpressed by my ironing efforts. Not to worry, there was an ironing board in the room and the problem was quickly rectified!
The bathroom was a good size with a bath and shower. The room had the all important tea and coffee selection – I can’t stand it when there are no in room refreshments, so important at our age to have your night time and morning cups of tea!
Despite our three course meal the night before, we were ready for our breakfast. Clearly all that walking around Stirling had given us an appetite (ahem). There was a nice continental selection at the rear of the restaurant which included fruit, cereals, juices, cold meats and cheese.
There was also an A La Carte menu. We ordered the cooked breakfast and the waffles and bacon. The portions weren’t too overwhelming and it had all been presented with care. The morning service wasn’t quite as strong as the previous evening, but was still good.
We really enjoyed Hotel Colessio and I wouldn’t hesitate to recommend it to anyone visiting Stirling.
