After our visit to Scone Palace, we of course ate in the pub restaurant when we were staying at Kirkstyle Inn.
I had spotted something that I thought was rose flavoured cider, I love all things rose flavoured so I couldn’t wait to try it…. and then I stupidly realised I had missed the accent and it was actually rosé cider, a sort of cider wine mash up. Unfortunately I wasn’t keen, but it did look very pretty.
The menu is fairly typical of a decent pub menu, and I had to smile at the unfussiness of the descriptions – the grilled goats cheese for example is served on a salad of ‘fancy tomatoes’. I’m presuming elsewhere these are what are now described as ‘heritage tomatoes’.
I chose the plainly titled Summer Salad as my starter. To be frank, it sounds duller than a visit to Dull (an actual place in Scotland) on a dull day. However, it was AMAZING, with every mouthful I was becoming more and more confused by how bloody tasty it was. I want to eat it again now. There was a ‘runny egg’ on top of some apple (yes, a very odd combination), and then there was chorizo, croutons, and a rosemary vinaigrette. I’m still confused. What mad person dreamt up this concoction? I can only assume they are a mad genius, because it worked, and I have no idea how.
My friend had the Scampi & Chips for main, a pub classic, and perfectly executed here – although it ain’t too difficult to bung some frozen ingredients in a fryer. I went for the Pork Belly to check that starter wasn’t a fluke and that chef could really cook. He or she can. The pork was rendered so the crackling crackled, the huge potato cake alongside ate better than it looked and the black pudding and creamed leeks with bacon all belonged. It was very good.
We shared the Eton mess style dessert with lovely big strawberries, crushed meringue and a huge dollop of cream and we retired to the room hoping neither of us was going to need to use the toilet in our open plan room (neither of us did, phew!).
I was impressed with the food at the Kirkstyle Inn and would happily return, especially if THAT salad is still on the menu!
