After a quick drink in The Blackbird (highly recommend this bar in Bruntsfield, good cocktail menu) I braved the blustery weather and crossed the road to La Petite Mort which is located just beside the Kings Theatre. I was practically blown off my feet as I tried to capture a quick Instagram story and eventually gave up to take shelter.
I was handed a glass of Saronsberg Methode Cap Classique Brut 2015, the first of a series of drinks selected by Inverarity Morton.
Edinburgh’s bloggers had assembled to road test La Petite Mort’s first Supper Club, and I was keen to try the food as we have partnered with them on the Foodinburgh Card (20% Off Food).
The restaurant has a cosy local vibe and I immediately felt comfortable. The wine was flowing with a Griset Sauvignon Gris 2015 up next, this featured some tropical notes but wasn’t too acidic.
Our first course of 48 Hour Smoked Pulled Pork Collar Terrine was served with a caramelised carrot mousse. This was a gently seasoned dish which was definitely a warm up for what was to come next.
For me the Black Ravioli Filled With Confit Lobster was easily dish of the night. This was served with blanched asparagus, roast celeriac and a caramelised butter hollandaise. The paired wine was a floral and fruity Riesling – ‘Mary McTaggart’ Riesling Woodstock.
The Roast Lamb Rump was served pink with a crispy croquette filled with deeply flavoured lamb shank. The Italian wine on its own was spicy with a good amount of tannin, which quickly mellowed out along side the meat – Criera Primetivo 2015 Schola Sarmenti.
My wine pick of the evening was a deliciously fruity affair – Muscat 2015 Domaine Jones. Wow, I could drink this on its own. I didn’t have to though as it was served alongside an inventive White Russian Cheesecake, I wasn’t entirely sure about the garnish of Blackberry, Mint and Pine Nut Salsa, despite me liking both mint and pine nuts. Nevertheless I’d always take inventive dishes over tried and tested (and tiresome?) combinations.
I was really impressed with the food, wine, and ambience of La Petite Mort and have already recommended it several times, and will continue to do so.
