Tuesday night isn’t the most popular night to go out for dinner, but if lobster is on offer, I’m there. You can enjoy the simple pleasure that is fresh lobster and crisp white wine, served with fries, garlic butter and a bottle of excellent French sauvignon blanc at Damm27 – £50 for two, or pop the cork on a bottle of Perrier Jouet for an extra £25.
Damm27 is located on Causewayside, an area that has become a lot more foodie recently. We were welcomed and seated by the manager who had a very keen eye for excellent service – we weren’t getting special treatment either, I watched him with other diners and he was just as attentive and charming with them.
Inside the decor is smart and comfortable with low lighting and a selection of different seating arrangements – we had a booth which I find the most comfortable. I loved the splash of colour and eccentricity of a set of angel wings and a halo on the way out to the bathroom (which was also really well done).
We started with a couple of small plates – Baby Squid Tempura first, served with a well balanced soy, ginger, and honey dip. The charred lime on the side was a nice touch.
Ham Hock & Gruyere Croquettes were all all killer, no filler – packed with shredded ham hock and gooey gruyere. Total comfort food moment.
The main event was a Half Lobster served with fries and lashings of garlic butter. Pure simplicity, and washed down with a very crisp sauvignon blanc which the manager was very proud of, and to be fair, it was a great match.
Desserts didn’t disappoint either. A luxuriously thick Cheesecake was adorned with a creme brulee style top – cheesecake isn’t usually my favourite but this was a good one.
The Sticky Toffee Pudding outshone the cheesecake though, this has to be one of the best sticky toffee puddings I’ve had in Edinburgh or anywhere. The pistachio ice cream on the side was a bit less rich than vanilla, which was a good thing. The little details like the chopped pistachios on the ice cream and the pot of extra sauce take Damm27 from good to…when can I go back? (I did actually try and visit again but couldn’t get a table!)
