We were invited to stay at the MacDonald Inchyra for a short overnight break just after Christmas. After a very busy and sociable festive season we were more than ready to find a quiet escape and to relax next to a pool for a bit…
The MacDonald Inchyra is an impressive traditional Scottish manor house set in 44 acres of land. Just 30 mins from both Edinburgh and Glasgow, this four star hotel boasts both an award winning Scottish Steakhouse and Spa.
Situated close to Stirling and Falkirk, it’s a perfect base for visiting Stirling Castle, The Kelpies or Callendar House for afternoon tea or a picnic. Or you can use it as a retreat as we did and enjoy the full spa experience.
We had everything we needed in the room, a plentiful supply of tea, coffee and biscuits as well as some fresh fruit.
We were only minutes after arriving and already my daughter, 13, was keen to drag us into the spa. After dropping our things off we headed straight there and were impressed by the pool, sauna and steam room. I took a book and settled down in the relaxation area for a couple of hours of peaceful bliss. The facilities were all really well kept, and while it did get busy at one stage, it wasn’t overwhelmingly so.
Afterward, with a pang of hunger that wouldn’t wait until dinner, we headed for the restaurant and bar for a bite to eat. We decided a pizza to share would see us through, but was disappointed by what arrived. The pizza which had been described as stone baked was clearly the cheapest kind of frozen pizza. It’s rare I complain but I actually felt it was inedible and we settled for some hand cut chips which were much better. I provided feedback at the time and hopefully this is something that will be rectified. At around £10 for the pizza, the quality really needs to better than that to avoid disappointment. I’m pleased to say our evening meal at the Scottish Steakhouse was a much better experience and I will cover that in detail in another post.
Our room was spacious and overlooked the tennis courts. The bathroom provided a selection of luxurious Elemis products and with a bath and shower there were plenty of facilities in which to use them.
As you can see the bed was huge and we made full use of the seating area beside the window, perfect for a spot of work or reading.
Here are some pictures of the spa. MacDonald Inchyra offer affordable spa breaks throughout the year and I would certainly recommend visiting for that purpose. They also offer treatments which would be a nice additional treat.
The breakfast combined the best of both worlds, there was a buffet with all the usual continental items including fresh juices, cereals and pastries. Guests can also choose cooked to order items from the menu which included a full breakfast, porridge, omelette, and my own favourite, boiled egg and soldiers!
Frozen pizza aside we had a lovely stay at Macdonald Inchyra, our highlights being a delicious meal in Scottish Steakhouse, aspects of which exceeded our expectations and a lovely relaxing afternoon at the spa.
