We’d heard about Nanyang long before we went for lunch. I think it was a picture of their deep fried noodle basket filled with chilli beef that first caught my eye on Instagram. Once I’d seen that, I knew we had to visit. After a ten minute search around the Forthquarter, we finally found Nanyang, an authentic Malaysian restaurant.
As we were just on a quick break from festival shows, we decided to go for the lunch menu. This features more of your classic Chinese favourites, the evening menu offering more adventurous Malay cuisine.
We chose two starters to share; Chicken Satay and Vegetable Spring Rolls
The Chicken Satay was more moist and flavourful than any other versions of this dish I’ve had, a very promising start to our meal.
The Vegetable Spring Rolls were freshly fried and served with a tasty sweet and hot dipping sauce, definitely no complaints here.
We chose two of our favourite dishes, ones we eat often, I always think this is a great way to gauge how good a restaurant is. I had Sweet and Sour Chicken and was surprised to find the chicken was still really crispy beneath the sweet sticky sauce. It was one of the best versions of this dish I’ve had, if not the best. The prawn crackers were an added extra but I wasn’t keen and left those to focus on the main event.
For similar reasons, the Lemon Chicken also punched above its weight.
We also had Beef in Black Bean Sauce which we didn’t manage to get a photo of. It was freshly made with the deep rich flavour you expect from black bean.
We were really impressed with Nanyang and have been on the look out for a restaurant that does this style of cuisine really well. We can’t wait to go back in the evening and try some of the other dishes, in particular that chilli beef in a fried noodle basket!
