I visited La Favorita recently so I was surprised to get the call up to say they had a new menu and would I return. After a very enjoyable trip to PizzaExpress with my daughter I was up for another pizza night, and so on a dark and cold night we were coaxed out of our cosy home to the depths of Leith Walk.
Once inside we were in the familiar warm and bustly environment, this time we were seated around the back in a nice little alcove out of the way of most of the action.
I began the negotiations with the 11 year old who mostly got her own way on the evening’s selection.
At the top of the most wanted list was the NEW Mozzarella Sticks. In fairness, who doesn’t want to eat fried cheese at this time of year in Scotland. My body is craving fat and sugar at the moment and I fear I will emerge from this winter looking like the Michelin man himself. The mozarella is made right here in Scotland on Yester Farm and is served with tomato salsa. They very much lived up to expectation with the third being carefully split between us.
Our second starter was mostly my choice, an Italian classic – Bruschetta – it was nice enough but I’d have liked a bigger hit of garlic, another drizzle of olive oil, and a bit more seasoning. It was lacking a wee bit in the flavour department.
What was most certainly not lacking in the flavour department was The Flying Pig pizza that we were both desperate to try. If you’ve had the Texas BBQ from Dominoes then you’ll be familiar with the flavour profile here – a base of barbecue sauce holds up toppings of pulled pork, chicken, and pancetta. The Flying Pig is better than the Texas BBQ and an absolute must try if you are a fan of the barbecue sauce over tomato base.
I had enforced my will to get a pasta to pair with our pizza, so Erin chose the Spaghetti Carbonara. It was non traditional in that it had the cream, however, I don’t really mind that. It was very delicious and an excellent version that I’d happily order again.
La Favorita is a great local family restaurant serving excellent quality food, and the new additions are real crowd pleasers.
