During our stay at MacDonald Inchyra we dined in their on site restaurant, Scottish Steakhouse. The menu looked really good, and despite hearing a few negative reviews (and having my own issue at lunch time) I was looking forward to it. I was also impressed by the kids menu which they had made a real effort with.
I ordered a glass of red wine (Malbec) and relaxed, one of the benefits of staying at a hotel is you don’t have to worry about driving home!
We started with the simply titled ‘Mushrooms on Toast‘, this was a selection of field mushrooms on toasted brioche. The brioche looked like half a toasted burger bun but was really delicious and the sauce was full of flavour. I really enjoyed it and could quite happily eat this right now as I type.
Our second starter was certainly a crowd pleaser, I looked around the restaurant and there were several guests tucking into their BBQ Chicken Wings & Pork Ribs – these were served with a coleslaw and a blue cheese dip. The winners were definitely the chicken wings which had more flavour than the ribs. Both elements would have benefited from being fired on the grill just to caramelise the sauce and crisp them up a bit. That said we did enjoy them.
Erin, my daughter, had the Haddock and Hand-Cut Chips from the Signatures section of the menu. I looked over a few minutes after our mains had arrived and noticed that she had unwrapped the lemon, we both had a little chuckle as I explained the lemon was meant to stay inside the gauze to catch any pips! The fish was cooked in a beer batter and served on crushed peas, the hand cut chips were the proper chunky variety that leave you feeling you’ve had a proper meal.
My lamb dish was the biggest surprise of the evening.
The Herb Crusted Scotch Lamb Rack was advertised as coming with Parmentier potatoes, I couldn’t find those but the Smoked Applewood Mash was excellent and so they weren’t missed. The lamb was pink and tender and the crispy kale was a great choice as it was a little bit crunchy and the strong flavour cut through the rich lamb. As well as a jus the dish was served with a mint salsa verde. There was nothing here that could have been improved upon. A dish that I won’t forget in a hurry.
Desserts also exceeded expectation. A rich Dark Chocolate Torte was adorned with some very nice sugar work and some much needed strawberries. The Lemon Meringue Tart was served with the fresh marshmallowy meringue only slightly blow torched, and while the sorbet was apparently bought in, it tasted great. I highly recommend finishing your meal off with a dessert here.
