I’m always on the look out for a pub that does good food. The Riccarton Inn serves Balerno, Currie, Riccarton and Juniper Green with a menu that is pitched perfectly for those times when you want dinner but don’t want to travel into the centre of Edinburgh.
We went at lunch time, there were a few areas of the pub to dine in but we chose to sit at the back of the pub away from the bar. The menus came and I was pleased to see that it wasn’t all burgers and steak.
We decided to have a few smaller dishes. First up Chicken Goujons with Sweet Chilli Mayonnaise, these appear on a lot menus but these ones were particularly good. Juicy chicken and a light crispy breadcrumb.
Next up we shared the Creamy Garlic Mushrooms on Brioche, the brioche being the unusual twist on this popular dish. It was quite sweet but I felt they got away with it, we polished off the lot.
Pictured above: Warm Bacon and Black Pudding Salad with a Soft Poached Egg. This is on the menu as a starter but made a perfect light lunch too. At £4.90, it was also a bargain!
Finally the Traditional Cullen Skink, this is available as a starter or main course, we chose the main course portion but could have easily gotten away with the starter portion. Creamy and full of haddock and large chunks of potato, it definitely did justice to this Scottish favourite.
