When I first started Foodinburgh, I was adamant that I wanted to include all types of establishments. That’s why we’ll cover independents alongside chains, as well as smaller places.
I stumbled across The Tartan Stag when Alex had to go and be a witness in a police line up (I know, never a dull moment here!).
I had initially just stopped in for a quick cuppa, but ended up staying more than a couple of hours as Alex was delayed. I was made to feel very welcome by the owners and spent my spare time perusing the art and cards – and yes, I couldn’t resist buying a few items, including this paper cut picture of the Forth Rail Bridge.
As well as being a local cafe, The Tartan Stag also doubles as a mini gallery and crafts shop with several items on sale that have been made by one of the owners and locals. I love places like this.
By the time Alex finally arrived I was starving. I ordered the Bacon, Waffle and Maple Syrup (pictured at the top), my appetite completely derailing any aspirations of healthy eating. It was delicious and I seem to remember, very cheap. Alex was much more reserved and opted for a Bacon Roll.
A great value independently run cafe that I will definitely return to if I’m in the area.
