Located on North St Andrew Street, not far from uber trendy Multrees Walk is a little hidden gem. Zest, a family run Indian restaurant, is serving up some authentic dishes, packed full of flavour. A warm welcome was provided by Gulam, the owner, who highly recommended that we give away the chore of deciding what to order from his comprehensive menu and let him take control of our culinary destiny for the night. We were more than happy with this idea and sat and pecked away at the poppadoms and pickle trays whilst Gulam created our feast.
He provided a great selection of starters which included Lamb and Chicken Kebabs, Vegetable Pakora and Garlic Mushrooms. All of these dishes were well cooked, full of flavour and delivered the satisfying feeling you come to expect from these Indian classics. All served with the obligatory fresh and (pardon the pun) zesty salad garnishes.
After our table was cleared by our very efficient and super polite waitress, we anticipated which of the main courses Gulam had chosen for us. We were treated to some exceptional dishes such as Chilli Garlic King Prawn, which was covered in a crispy breadcrumb, fried and then covered in a flavour packed sauce, rich with aromatic spices and a nice bit of heat coming from the chilli.
A dish we had that came with an interesting story was the P297 Special Curry, so named because Gulam an ex taxi driver, used his own recipe to cook for his old colleagues and served it up to them when they visited his first restaurant even though it wasn’t on the menu. When Zest launched, Gulam added his signature curry to the menu under the title of his old taxi number plate. I can see why the P297 was held in such high regard because it was exceptionally tasty, with deep rich flavours of complex spices and a mild chilli hit.
Vegetable Stuffed Peppers were served alongside the main courses and they too were packed with flavour and the vegetables were very well cooked. Throw in a sweet Peshwari Naan bread and some fragrant Basmati rice and Gulam had tailored a magnificent meal.
Great food and the usual friendly-can’t-do-enough-for-you Indian style of hospitality. A lovely night and we retired to our loose clothing very happy.
