The Guru has been a favourite of ours for many years. Their small restaurant and take away was located at Fountainpark, but they have now launched a much bigger restaurant at the site of the old Mr Boni’s, who remembers that? Ok it’s had a few incarnations since then, but that was definitely the most memorable. Inside the fit out is stunning and has definitely benefited from someone who has an eye for interior design. If you do visit, don’t miss out on a visit to the bathroom (not often you’ll hear us say that on this blog!)

We arrived promptly at 5pm, the doors were still closed. We wondered if perhaps we had the opening times wrong, but when a group of men arrived too, we realised that they were just running a bit late. The welcome was a bit cold when we did get inside, I felt a bit like a nuisance for showing up.

We ordered a few of our favourites, chicken pakora, butter chicken, and of course the infamous naan – would it still be as big as it was before?

Complimentary poppadums and chutneys arrived, a nice touch. The cocktails were beautifully made and presented, well worth the £4.25 price tag. Erin had the strawberry daiquiri, I had a pina colada – we highly recommend both.

The food seems every bit as good as it had been, the chicken pakora was crispy and served with a variety of dips.

Shortly after our starter plates were cleared, a large wooden trestle tray was brought over to adorn the table. I wasn’t sure quite what this was for… and then the naan was paraded over and laid on its wooden altar, resplendent in all its golden, garlicky, glory!

The butter chicken was fresh and not too oily. At first sight the portion looked small for the increased price (to be expected), but as we began eating we realised this was a visual trick, the portion was more than ample. The spicy chips made for a nice twist on the classic.

Overall a really lovely meal, sadly the service remained as cold as the sub zero temperatures outside. Would it put us off going? I’d try once more, but with such a beautiful interior, all other aspects of the experience need to be on point too, and when they are, it will be an absolute winner.
