Part 2 of the Lanarkshire Larder Food Trail took us to the centre of the trail to the ‘New Lanark’ section. If you’d like to read Part 1 the ‘Strathaven’ end click here – Lanarkshire Larder Food Trail Part 1.

We picked up the trail (you can check out the trail here and download the map here) at Goulding’s Garden Centre…

No.10 Goulding’s Garden Centre

Goulding’s is just one of the garden centres on this stretch which seems to be Scotland’s garden centre central! Established in 1897, Goulding’s Garden Centre is award winning and not only only offers all the usual garden centre type stuff but it has a wee farm shop too. This is predominantly packaged stuff but it’s great for gifts and stocking up on weekend treats.

No.11 Overton Farm Shop

Overton Farm is a farm shop, butchery and restaurant by a Lanarkshire farmer. We arrived at brunch and went straight to the cafe which has an outdoor kids play area – it was quite a good little one with ride on tractors etc and all enclosed. I had a lovely twist on the classic Eggs Benedict. Instead of a muffin it was a scone and the ham element was shredded ham hock. After eating we went next door where there’s a plentiful farm shop with a wide variety of products including fresh veggies – just look at those heritage carrots!

No.12 The Duke’s Deli

Later on in the afternoon we dropped into The Duke’s Deli and had one of the best boards we’ve ever had. It had such a lovely variety including proper thick cut ham, olives, balsamic onions, paté, homemade quiche made in their own bakery, fresh bread and chutneys. It was well worth a visit and we’d definitely pop by again if we were in the area. If you can’t make the visit, you can also buy some of their delicious hampers online.

No 15. New Lanark Hotel & Weekend Market

We spent the night at The New Lanark Hotel which is on the Unesco Heritage Site of New Lanark. The hotel is inside one of the former mills. The room was really spacious and comfortable and there is plenty to do on site so perfect for a mini break. We had dinner in the hotel which always exceeds expectations. Throughout the summer months they host a weekend market with various arts and crafts and food stalls. I won’t spoil the story behind New Lanark for you but we highly recommend the Annie McLeod Experience which takes you through the whole story – it’s good for both kids and adults.

No.16 Carmichael Farm Shop & Bistro

Our final stop for this section of the trip was the Carmichael Farm Shop & Estate. We discovered while we were there that the estate is run by the Carmichael Clan Chief and there is a little headquarters and visitors room at the back of the shop where clan members can visit and pop a pin in their clan map. The estate has various interests but the venison is the main focus. We were taken for a ride around the estate and were given some delicious products to try by Andrew, the clan chief’s son.

After our tour we were invited to stay for some lunch at their bistro where you can enjoy some of the produce from the farm. We opted to try the tapas menu which we were really impressed by. We had little koftas, gambas pil pil, garlic mushrooms, a fresh salad and lots of crusty bread. A perfect end to a lovely afternoon and we drove back to Penicuik feeling very satisfied.

Carmichael Bistro

We highly recommend exploring the trail, there’s so many inspiring food producers to discover. It’s a real foodie adventure!
