After, St James Quarter, Edinburgh’s newest shopping, eating and entertainment centre is now open and we’re seeing all the restaurants open. Already we have Bonnie and Wild, Salerno Pizza, and Pho, amongst others.

Tortilla sits across from a busy Five Guys and offers up Mexican street food. This is quick counter service with a variety of classic Mexican dishes including nachos, tacos, and quesadillas.

The restaurant is colourful, clean, and inviting. We opted to try all three meats; barbacoa beef, pork and chicken. In order of our favourites, in third place was the barbacoa beef nachos, we loved the beef but found the cheese sauce a bit grainy. The salsa and guacamole were made with fresh ingredients and exactly as we’d want them. We ate it all but probably wouldn’t order it again because of the cheese sauce, there are better dishes.

In second place was the pork tacos. At Tortilla you choose all your accompaniments and basically build your own dishes, we added pickled pink onions to ours which is one of our favourite Mexican toppings. All the dishes seemed to be priced around £6, which we’d say is good value.

A surprising winner for the day was the chicken quesadillas. I’d thought these would be in third position as we make them so often at home, however these were really well made and served with a sour cream and salsa dip plus tortilla chips making it a perfect and complete little meal.

Tortilla is a good quick bite option, all the dishes are a pretty safe bet and it won’t break the bank. A good addition to St James Quarter.
