It had been a while since I’d visited Prestonfield House for afternoon tea (several years now), but when Sam suggested we have a pre-Christmas treat, it was the first place to spring to mind. The rich decor and excellent service make it a real indulgence that I was looking forward to experiencing again.

Like all timeless classics, I was pleased to discover not much had changed since my last visit. The afternoon tea at Prestonfield House is £40 per person, or £50 with champagne. For that you can enjoy everything on the menu, and as much tea as you can manage. The tea list is quite extensive with plenty to choose from and very high quality. We recommend the Rose Petal, Hazelnut, and Earl Grey, but I’m sure all the others were just as good.

The afternoon tea included some warm offerings including a Haggis Croquette, a festive Apricot Suffing in Blanket, and our favourite a cheese and onion tart.

We had the obligatory selection of sandwiches, they are totally fine to swap any flavours you’re not so keen on. The sandwich fillings certainly erred on the safe and traditional side, I’d have liked something a little different but they were tasty crowd pleasers. The scones while fresh, weren’t served warm. I can’t remember if they were last time, but it’s always a nice touch. The handmade cakes offered a really good variety and included a Snowflake Cocktail Macaron and a Cranberry and White Chocolate Profiterole. Once again though, due to the exquisite pastry, it was the Passionfruit Tart which won our hearts.

Once again a lovely experience with attentive service in really special surroundings.
